Penzance Folk Club - Gallery

Hilary Roberts
Hilary became keen on Irish singing and dancing in the 60s and 70s, during family holidays in Kerry. A family friend taught her songs on the guitar, there was céilí dancing, and singing in pubs. Back home, she sought out the folk scene in Bristol and later enjoyed both English and Irish sessions in Manchester. After a break from music (family, work, etc), she and Steve moved to Newlyn in 2010. She dusted off her guitar, joined the session at the Pirate Inn, and began to learn the Golowan tunes. She was introduced to the Penzance Folk Club, and gradually developed a repertoire. Through the club, she found folk mentors to whom she is grateful for their encouragement and help. Hilary enjoys songs with a powerful story, an unexpected twist, a touch of humour, or strong female characters.
